Dhaka is a megacity and one of the major cities of South Asia. It has a population of over 16 million in 2011, making it the largest city in Bangladesh. It is the 9th largest city in the world and also 28th among the most densely populated cities in the world. Dhaka is known as the City of Mosques and with 400,000 cycle rickshaws running on its streets every day, the city is also described as the Rickshaw Capital of the World.
There is a “big Thirst” for higher education in Bangladesh. 60% of the population is below the age of 24. There is a huge demand for quality education. English is spoken widely throughout the City. Since, 1992, the Government has allowed the establishment of Private Universities. They have their own degree awarding powers and so far over 50 Private Universities have been established. They have been very successful especially North South University, American International University, BRAC University, East West University and Independent University. Many “Upper Middle class” and “Upper class” families now no longer need to send their children abroad to study. These Private Universities offer a high quality degree programmes that are of a high international standard. We have recently established our presence here. There are only very few “Institutions” that offer British degrees and we have seen a great opportunity to develop our degree programmes in this market. We have started with our campus in Banani, which is widely renowned as the “Student area” in Dhaka. Most private Universities are situated here.
